Chitipa United suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Songwe Border United on Wednesday afternoon, falling to a team that had failed to win any of their previous 19 league matches this season.
Owen Mwangonde’s eighth-minute strike proved to be the decisive moment, giving Sãongwe their first victory of the campaign and lifting spirits at a club that had endured a winless start to the season.

The defeat saw Chitipa drop from ninth to tenth in the standings after being leapfrogged by Creck Sporting, who beat Mighty Tigers on Wednesday in Blantyre. Chitipa had hoped to build momentum following a win against Moyale Barracks and a draw against Creck Sporting Club, and missed the opportunity to climb to eighth place on goal difference, level with Kamuzu Barracks.
Chitipa United’s assistant coach Sullivan Kandulu reflected on a frustrating afternoon that saw his side dominate possession but fail to capitalize on their opportunities.
“It was a very good game. Songwe got just one chance in the eighth minute and they scored. We had so many chances but we failed to score,” said Kandalu. “That’s what really hurt us today. It was a game which I can say that we underrated, and we have to learn from it so that we don’t repeat it in our next games.”
Kandulu acknowledged the need for his team to quickly move on from the disappointment and focus on their upcoming fixtures.
“The game is gone, we have to take the mistakes and correct them as we prepare for the game against Dedza,” he said. “We will go to training and correct them and try to win the next game. We cannot dwell on this loss.”
The assistant coach also offered an apology to the club’s supporters, who had traveled hoping to see their team continue their improved form.
“We know that this defeat is painful to our supporters. They were hoping to get a positive result but we appreciate their support and we have to pay them back in our next game. We apologize for this loss,” Kandulu added.
The result leaves Chitipa United with a record of five wins, eight draws, and seven defeats from 20 matches, having collected 23 points so far this season. They will look to bounce back when they host Dedza Dynamos on Sunday.
