Silver Strikers’ scintillating full-back Tatenda M’balaka is edging closer to a return from a long-term injury as the Bankers push to defend their TNM Super League title.
The talented left-footer’s 2023 season was derailed by a knee injury sustained during a match against MAFCO. What initially seemed like a routine knock developed into a persistent problem that continued to plague M’balaka, ultimately forcing him to miss the remainder of what had been a breakthrough campaign.
The injury came at a particularly cruel time for the defender, who had established himself as the first-choice left-back for the senior Malawi national team and was enjoying one of his best seasons in club football.

Initial attempts to treat the injury locally proved unsuccessful. After extensive consultation, doctors recommended that M’balaka travel abroad for specialized treatment. Medical examinations revealed he had torn his meniscus, necessitating surgical intervention.
On January 24th this year, M’balaka underwent successful knee surgery at AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya, marking the beginning of what would be a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Since the surgery, “Joker” – as M’balaka is affectionately known – has been diligently working through his rehabilitation program. His recent social media post featuring a picture with the caption “guess what?” has sparked excitement among Silver Strikers fans about his potential return.
Speaking to the Super League of Malawi in July, M’balaka provided insight into both his physical recovery and mental journey:

“I’m pleased to report that my recovery is going well. The surgery and rehabilitation process are on track, and I’m optimistic about my progress,” he said.
The defender was candid about the comprehensive impact of his injury: “The injury had a significant impact on me physically, mentally, and emotionally. However, I’ve learned a valuable lesson: that life and football are unpredictable. I’ve come to understand the importance of giving my all on the field because the future is uncertain.”
Despite being at the peak of his career and a regular in the national setup, M’balaka acknowledged the pain of the setback while maintaining a positive outlook: “Despite being at the peak of my career and part of the national team, the injury remains a painful experience. Yet, I’ve accepted it and am looking forward to a stronger comeback, believing that tough times are temporary.”
M’balaka’s approach to his recovery has been built on unwavering self-belief and faith. “I believe in confidence and resilience, knowing that I will never look down on myself. I’m determined to come back even stronger than before,” he explained.
Drawing strength from his spiritual beliefs, the defender added: “Drawing inspiration from my faith, I believe that what was lost will be returned tenfold. This gives me the conviction that I will regain my form.”
With characteristic optimism, M’balaka expressed hope for a return before the current season concludes: “I’m optimistic about returning to the field before the season ends. My determination and confidence suggest that I’m working hard towards this goal.”
M’balaka’s anticipated return will create welcome selection headaches for Silver Strikers head coach Peter Mgangira. In the defender’s absence, Dan Sandukira and Precious Sambani have been competing for the left-back position.
The prospect of having three quality options for the crucial defensive role could prove vital as Silver Strikers continue their quest to retain the TNM Super League title.
