Defending champions Silver Strikers head coach Peter Mgangira has demanded strong character from his players ahead of Sunday’s crucial encounter against league leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in Blantyre.

The Central Bankers travel to the commercial city desperately seeking three points that would trim the gap at the summit to just four points, with a game in hand over their intercity rivals.

Mgangira’s charges occupy third position with 36 points from 17 matches, sitting seven points adrift of Peter Mponda’s Bullets, who have accumulated 43 points from 18 games.

“The boys look ready for the match come Sunday. We played on Thursday and got a good result, and we are hopeful of getting maximum points on this one,” Mgangira said.

“Yes, we are playing a good side. Bullets are one of the best teams in Malawi and also led by a good coach [Peter Mponda]. However, as we always say, we respect our opponents but we do not fear them. Therefore, we are geared ahead of this match as we aim to reduce the gap on points up there.”

The experienced tactician stressed the importance of clinical finishing in matches of this magnitude.

“The only thing that I expect from the boys is that they utilize the chances they get. This is a big game which does not give you numerous goal-scoring opportunities—you just have to score from the few you get.”

“Defending the Crown”

Mgangira also reminded his players of their responsibility as reigning champions and expressed confidence in their commitment to retaining the title.

“The players are knowing the importance of this game. We are the defending champions and we should show that we have the interests of defending the championship. We will put our heart in it.”

Silver Strikers enter the contest riding a wave of momentum, having won their last three league matches against Chitipa United, Mighty Tigers, and Mzuzu City Hammers. The team is currently on a 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Their last defeat came at the hands of Bullets in the Airtel Top 8 Cup final, and remarkably, they have suffered just one league loss this season—also against Bullets in the opening fixture of the campaign.

The confidence in the camp will be boosted by their recent 3-0 victory over Blue Eagles in the FDH Bank Cup on Thursday. Additionally, Silver Strikers carry fond memories from Kamuzu Stadium, having stunned Bullets there last season.

Sunday’s showdown promises to be a compelling battle as the champions look to reignite their title defense and close the gap on the runaway leaders.
