Flames Assistant coach, Peter Mponda, has described the team’s performance against Namibia on Sunday afternoon as very encouraging saying the team improved greatly from a poor showing in their Group B opener against Lesotho.
Mponda said this after the team played a goalless draw against the Brave Warriors to have chances of progressing to the semi finals of the COSAFA Cup very slim as the team needs to beat Angola with at least four goals in the final group match to have a chance to progress.

“The score could be 0-0 but today we played better than our last game. We greatly improved and we created chances, shoot on goal only that we did not get a goal. However this is an encouraging performance from the boys.” Said Mponda.
Meanwhile, the team was granted a chance to boost its opportunities to qualify for the last four after Angola beat Lesotho 4-0 in the opening tie on Sunday to leave thef Group B wide open but the Flames failed to find the back of the net despite putting a much-spirited performance.
Mponda, however, believes the team can still progress through to the semis as the performance on Sunday has given him huge hopes of achieving that against the defending Champions and current leaders of the group.
“Like I said the performance is quite encouraging and if we play like this against Angola I believe we can beat them and see how the other match ends.” Mponda added.
A win against Angola on Tuesday will take Malawi up to four points and having a head to head advantage over Angola but the other game between Lesotho, which has three points and a head-to-head advantage over Malawi; and Namibia which has two points could judge their fate.
The Flames remain fourth with just a point in the Group from one draw and one defeat while Angola, Lesotho and Namibia occupy the top three in that sequence.
