FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will seek to shake off the disappointment of consecutive defeats to arch-rivals Mighty Wanderers when they travel to Nankhaka Stadium in Area 30 to face Blue Eagles on Thursday.
The People’s Team are still reeling from two successive losses to their cross-town nemeses—a humbling 3-0 league defeat followed by a narrow 1-0 cup elimination. Now, in a twist of sporting irony, they face another side that dealt them a painful blow earlier in the campaign, having fallen 1-0 to the Capital City-based outfit in their previous encounter.

Victory at Nankhaka would serve multiple purposes for Peter Mponda’s men: it would provide an immediate response to their recent setbacks, deliver sweet revenge against Eagles, and crucially, propel them back to the summit of the league standings. With current leaders Mighty Wanderers seeing their Wednesday fixture abandoned due to torrential rainfall in Blantyre, the door has swung open for Bullets to reclaim top spot.
Currently trailing Wanderers by two points, Bullets know that maximum points against Eagles would see them leapfrog their rivals and establish a precious one-point cushion at the top of the table. It represents not just an opportunity, but perhaps the perfect catalyst to reignite their championship ambitions.
Speaking candidly about the challenge of lifting his squad after the double disappointment against Wanderers, Mponda revealed the emotional toll the defeats had taken on everyone associated with the club.
“After the final whistle, everyone was frustrated—the players, the supporters, and myself,” Mponda reflected with evident emotion. “Looking at how we performed, to walk away with nothing was not short of disappointing and frustrating.”
The veteran coach admitted that he grappled with the question of how to restore his players’ confidence and morale. However, he expressed satisfaction with their response on the training ground.
“I had concerns about how to lift the players again, but the good thing is that they have responded magnificently. They are in excellent shape, their spirits are high, and they understand precisely what we need to fight for in this championship race,” Mponda explained.
The quick turnaround between fixtures, he suggested, could work in their favor. “The game has come very quickly, which is actually beneficial for us—it’s a perfect chance to respond early after such a painful loss. We are absolutely determined to bounce back.”
The rivalry between Blue Eagles and Bullets has consistently delivered drama, unexpected twists, and fluctuating fortunes over the years. Since 2008, the statistical record reveals a competitive fixture with Eagles claiming 10 victories, Bullets securing 17 wins, and 15 encounters ending in stalemates—testament to the unpredictable nature of this matchup.
Bullets’ away record at Nankhaka has been particularly troublesome in recent seasons. The visitors haven’t tasted victory on Eagles’ home turf since 2020, when Precious Sambani’s solitary strike proved decisive. Their subsequent visits have yielded frustrating draws: a 1-1 stalemate in 2022, with John Malidadi Jr. canceling out Babatunde Adepoju’s opener, and a goalless affair in 2023.
More recently, Eagles have held the upper hand, recording back-to-back victories over their illustrious opponents—a penalty shootout triumph in the 2024 FDH Bank Cup and that crucial 1-0 league win in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
Eagles Eye Historic Double
The hosts enter Thursday’s encounter positioned ninth in the standings with 31 points from 22 matches. For the Area 30-based law enforcers, the stakes are equally high: victory would complete a rare seasonal double over Bullets while delivering their ninth win of the campaign, enough to vault them into sixth position, leapfrogging Chitipa United, Kamuzu Barracks, and Ekhaya in one fell swoop.
However, defensive frailties have plagued Eagles throughout the season. They have conceded an average of just over one goal per game, shipping 23 goals in 22 matches while scoring 25 at the opposite end. Their home fortress at Nankhaka has been moderately solid, with four victories, three draws, and three defeats from 10 fixtures, scoring 15 and conceding nine. On their travels, they have been more vulnerable, managing four wins, four draws, and four losses from 12 away fixtures, with 10 goals scored and 14 conceded.
In stark contrast, Bullets arrive in the Capital City with formidable statistics that underscore their title credentials. Having accumulated 49 points from 21 matches, they boast an impressive goal difference, having found the net 46 times while conceding just 13—a defensive record that speaks volumes about their organizational strength.
Their away form has been particularly impressive: seven victories from nine road trips this season, with no draws and just two defeats. They have scored 12 goals and conceded merely four in hostile territory. At home, their dominance has been even more pronounced, with nine wins from 12 matches, one draw, and two losses, accompanied by a remarkable 34 goals scored against just nine conceded.
Despite the weight of statistics and historical narratives surrounding the fixture, Mponda insisted his focus remains singular and unwavering.
“I’m not looking at records or analyzing what Blue Eagles have been doing in recent games, even though they’ve won one out of their last three,” the coach stated with clarity. “We are focused exclusively on these 90 minutes, which are absolutely critical for us. We need three points if we are to bring our season back on track.”
Acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Mponda added: “We lost to Blue Eagles at home—they are a good side, coached by a good coach. But the boys are raring to go.”
As the floodlights illuminate Nankhaka Stadium on Thursday evening, all eyes will be on whether Bullets can rediscover their championship-winning formula or whether Eagles can pull off another memorable upset. For Peter Mponda and his squad, the message is clear: redemption begins now.
