Mighty Wanderers dropped two vital points over the weekend, drawing 1-1 with Northern Region side Chitipa United at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Hoping to finish the first round as winners, the Nomads got off to a difficult start when Chitipa United capitalized on a goalkeeping error. Wanderers attempted to build from the back, but when the ball was played to goalkeeper Chancy Mtete, he was too slow to clear it, allowing Chitipa’s Andrew Joseph to block the ball into the net.
Despite the early setback, the Nomads broke Chitipa United’s four-game run without conceding a goal when Blessings Singini powered home an equalizer. Efforts to find a winner, however, proved futile as Chitipa’s defense stood firm for the rest of the game.

After the match, Wanderers’ Head Coach Bob Mpinganjira refused to blame his goalkeeper for the blunder, instead stating that the team lost as a collective.
“I wouldn’t blame the goalkeeper. We have lost as a team,” Mpinganjira said. “You would notice that the pass which led to the goal came from inside. It happens in football, and we move on.”
“It was a mistake to give our opponents a chance in the early minutes of the game. We conceded a goal and gave them a chance to get stabilized,” he added. “We came back and leveled the score, but we couldn’t manage to kill the game completely. We carry the blame; we should have done better than this. All the same, we look forward to the next game.”
Mighty Wanderers remain unbeaten in the league after 14 games. They will be looking for a positive result in their last game of the first round against Civil Service United in the capital city.
The match will be a tough challenge, as Civil Service United is currently the most in-form team in the league. They have won their last four games and are unbeaten in their last seven, collecting 17 points from a possible 21. Following Wanderers’ recent draws, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have moved within just one point of them after winning their last two assignments.
