Mafco FC has set a top-eight finish as its main target for the season, following a recent run of impressive performances and results. The Salima-based side, known as the “Soldiers,” endured a tough start to the 2025 season but has since found its footing.
After an opening victory against Chitipa United, Mafco suffered consecutive losses to Karonga United and Kamuzu Barracks. The team’s struggles continued with a mixed bag of results, including a win against Hammers, and losses to Mighty Wanderers, Moyale Barracks, Creck Sporting, and Blue Eagles. They also managed a draw against Civil Services United.
However, the team’s fortunes have since changed dramatically. Mafco has hit a strong stride, winning three of its last five games. This impressive run includes victories over Mighty Tigers (3-1) and Dedza Dynamos (2-0), a draw against Silver Strikers, and a win against Songwe Border FC. Their only loss during this period was a narrow 1-0 defeat to second-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

Coach Gondwe Confident in Team’s Progress
Following the loss to Bullets, Head Coach Stereo Gondwe expressed confidence in his team’s direction. “We will go back to the training ground and prepare the boys for the next game against Ekhaya FC,” said Gondwe. “We are going to have a very good starting point for the second round because we really struggled earlier this season, but you have seen that in our recent games, the team is gelling up.”

Gondwe emphasized that the team is still a work in progress. “We are building a new team, and I believe that in the second round, we will be another team,” he stated. “Hopefully, we will finish in the top eight this season because we want to play in the Airtel Top 8 next season.”
The coach praised his players’ recent performance, despite the loss. “We have played five games recently, winning three, drawing once, and losing once. We at least have confidence in the players,” Gondwe said. “I’m very, very happy with the performance of the team [against Bullets]. The players did what we planned and played a very good game.”
Mafco has a history in the Top 8 cup, having reached the final in 2023 where they were defeated by FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. The team will face Ekhaya FC in their final game of the first round, aiming to finish on a high note and continue their push for a top-eight spot.
