Mighty Wanderers have received a significant boost ahead of their crucial TNM Super League clash against Karonga United this Sunday afternoon at Karonga Stadium. The Nomads welcome back their influential captain, Lawrence Chaziya, and experienced goalkeeper, Chancy Mtete, into the squad.
This positive news was confirmed by head coach Bob Mpinganjira in a pre-match interview, as the Nomads find themselves in a tantalizing position: either securing revenge or risking a second straight defeat against the “Ingwina syaku Karonga” (Crocodiles of Karonga) on their home turf.

Chaziya’s return is particularly vital, as he’s been sidelined for almost four weeks, leaving the team with limited options at center-back. Mtete’s comeback also provides much-needed relief in goal, especially after he sustained an injury two weeks ago, forcing the club to call up a goalkeeper from their Reserve side to support Dalitso Khungwa while Richard Chipuwa remains out.
Despite these welcome returns, the Nomads will still be without the services of striker Clement Nyondo due to injury. Additionally, Sama Thierry Tanjong and Mphatso Kamanga have been granted more time to ensure a full recovery.
“Clement Nyondo has joined the injury list and we have also left out Sama [Tanjong], Mphatso Kamanga, and Chimwemwe Nkhoma so that we give them more time to recover,” explained Mpinganjira.
“We have however taken on board Chancy Mtete and Captain Lawrence Chaziya, who are now undergoing full training.”
Ahead of the match, Mpinganjira anticipates a tough challenge from the hosts, acknowledging their strength. Karonga United famously knocked Wanderers out of the Airtel Top 8 last month and also secured a home victory against them last year.
“Karonga are a good side, and we acknowledge that fact,” said Mpinganjira. “We will however just play our game and not let history take center stage. I believe we have built a good side capable of bringing us victory on Sunday, and we will have to fight and win.”
The Nomads’ last victory at Karonga Stadium against Karonga United dates back to June 4, 2023, when goals from Lawrence Chaziya and Isaac Kaliati sealed the win, despite Alfred Chizinga’s effort for the hosts. In their last five league meetings, Wanderers have dominated, winning four and losing just one.
A win on Sunday would be monumental for Mighty Wanderers. It would see them climb to the top of the TNM Super League table, adding to their impressive tally of 22 points from seven wins and one draw. With 16 goals scored and just four conceded in the league, the Nomads are in prime position to seize the top spot and continue their relentless pursuit of the championship.
