Three Southern African teams have confirmed their participation in the Football Association of Malawi’s 4-Nation Women’s Tournament, scheduled for late November.
The tournament, set to run from 29 November to 2 December 2025, will serve as crucial preparation for Malawi’s upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign.

Following Wa Mpira’s report last week about FAM’s plans to host the tournament, all three invited nations—Zambia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe—have now accepted the invitation.
Malawi secured their place at the 2026 WAFCON after defeating Angola 2-0 on aggregate. FAM President Fleetwood Haiya emphasized that the team’s ambitions extend beyond mere participation.
“Previously when the team played games, it was just COSAFA and they needed to wait again for another COSAFA tournament. But we put much effort into the team, and after their COSAFA win two years ago, we saw potential—that’s why we invested a lot. That equal salary with the Flames is part of that,” Haiya said.
FAM has set an ambitious target for the team to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup by finishing in the top four at WAFCON. The tournament will serve as World Cup qualifiers, with semi-finalists earning their place at the global showpiece.
“We are planning to have more friendlies and at some point host a four-nations women’s tournament. We will target at least two countries that have also qualified for WAFCON, and to save costs and other things, it will be played here in Malawi,” Haiya revealed.
The 4-Nation Tournament represents a significant step in Malawi’s preparations, bringing together regional rivals in competitive action ahead of the continental championship.
