MAFCO FC head coach Stereo Gondwe was left frustrated on Wednesday after his team surrendered a two-goal lead in the dying minutes to draw 2-2 against Karonga United in the TNM Super League.
The Soldiers appeared headed for victory after Zikani Sichinga opened the scoring in the 49th minute and China Chirwa added a second in the 75th minute—his sixth goal of the season. However, Karonga United staged a dramatic late comeback, with Godfrey Sibale pulling one back in the 88th minute before Antony Mfune struck in the 90th minute to salvage a point for the visitors.
Gondwe expressed disappointment with his team’s inability to hold onto their lead and vowed to address the issues with his players.

“Being in a position where we were about to get three points and then conceding late is very painful. I don’t even know what to say. I will have to speak to the players and fix this because it seems we have drastically gone down,” said Gondwe.
The coach also expressed concern about the team’s defensive frailties at home, noting they have now played consecutive 2-2 draws. In their previous match against Kamuzu Barracks, MAFCO came from two goals down to secure a point—meaning they have conceded four goals in their last two home games.

“This game and the last game against KB, we were not good. Imagine conceding four goals in two games—it’s not looking good. We need to correct this as much as possible because we might lose fans here in Dowa,” Gondwe added.
On a brighter note, striker China Chirwa continues his impressive form, having scored four goals in the team’s last three league matches. After netting the winner in a 2-1 victory over Ekhaya FC and scoring twice in the comeback draw against KB, his goal against Karonga takes him to six in the golden boot race.
Despite Chirwa’s individual brilliance, MAFCO remain 12th on the log table with 23 points from six wins, five draws, and nine losses.
