Vunga eager to impress at Flames against Lesotho in friendly matches

Uchizi Vunga has established himself as one of Silver Strikers’ most consistent performers over the past three seasons, yet a permanent place in the Malawi National Team has remained elusive—until now.

The midfielder was the subject of intense analysis by Young Africa Sports Club ahead of their CAF Champions League encounter earlier this month, a testament to his growing influence in domestic football. Despite his consistent form for the Area 47-based side and across the TNM Super League, Vunga has struggled to cement his position in the national setup.

Vunga’s international journey began in May last year when Patrick Mabedi handed him his first call-up for World Cup Qualifiers against São Tomé and Equatorial Guinea. A second opportunity came in February this year when Malawi faced Comoros. However, neither appearance translated into a regular spot in the squad.

Now, with Kalisto Pasuwa at the helm and building towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, Vunga has been given another chance. The Football Association of Malawi secured two friendly matches against Lesotho, to be played in South Africa, and Pasuwa included the Silver Strikers midfielder in his squad.

Determined to Seize the Moment

Speaking to the Association’s media, Vunga expressed his gratitude and determination. “I’m happy that the coach [Kalisto Pasuwa] has also entrusted me to join the squad again,” he said. “I have to make sure that I use this opportunity and do what he wants me to do so that we do well as a team in our next two games.”

The midfielder exuded confidence about Malawi’s prospects. “We believe that we can do well even in the [AFCON] qualifiers. We believe that we can do well—not only we can, but we will do well.”

Vunga’s credentials are impressive. The deft left-footed midfielder formed a formidable partnership with Chikondi Kamanga and Chimwemwe Idana in Silver Strikers’ midfield last season, playing a pivotal role in the club’s 2024 league title triumph. He registered 10 assists and scored four goals in the campaign, earning him the TNM Super League Midfielder of the Season award.

Pasuwa acknowledged that Vunga’s performances make him impossible to ignore. “He played in the CAF Champions League and performed well, same as Andrew Joseph and Chifundo Mphasi,” the coach said. “But I want them to challenge me and say they want to play.”

For Vunga, this could be the opportunity he’s been waiting for—a chance to translate his club consistency into national team permanence. With two friendlies ahead and the AFCON qualifiers on the horizon, the stage is set for him to make his mark.
