Malawi’s number one goalkeeper William Thole has provided an encouraging update on his injury after being forced off during Friday’s crucial 2-1 victory over Namibia in Botswana.

The Simba Bhora shot-stopper was substituted in the 35th minute after sustaining an injury from what appeared to be a dangerous challenge by Orlando Pirates forward Deon Hotto. Silver Strikers goalkeeper George Chikooka came on as his replacement.

Taking to Facebook to address concerns about his fitness, Thole expressed gratitude for his recovery and congratulated his teammates on their impressive performance.

“Thank God, I am back on my feet. Thanks for the healing wishes. And congratulations to the team for the impressive win,” the goalkeeper wrote on his social media page.

Despite the early setback of losing their first-choice goalkeeper, Malawi delivered a commanding performance that keeps their qualification hopes very much alive. The Flames now sit just three points behind Namibia in Group H, setting up an intriguing battle for second place.

The match got off to the perfect start for Kalisto Pasuwa’s side when Richard Mbulu capitalized on a defensive error just five minutes in. The Richards Bay striker showed excellent awareness to pounce on a misplaced back pass and slot past the Namibian goalkeeper.

Malawi’s lead was doubled in the second half through Gabadinho Mhango’s moment of brilliance. The experienced forward spotted the opposition goalkeeper off his line and produced a trademark finish from the center circle, adding another memorable goal to his impressive international tally.

Head coach Kalisto Pasuwa was critical of the match officials, particularly regarding the incident that led to Thole’s injury. The coach felt the referee failed to adequately protect his goalkeeper from what he viewed as a reckless challenge.

“It was a serious one and I thought the player deserves a red card. And again, in the second half, added time, there was another foul which deserved a red card. On the injured guy, [William Thole], it’s a big setback, we have to hear from our doctors,” said Pasuwa.

With Monday’s home fixture against Liberia at Bingu National Stadium fast approaching, Pasuwa will be hoping to have his first-choice goalkeeper available for selection. Thole’s positive update suggests he may be in contention to feature, though the coaching staff will likely assess his condition closer to match day.
