KC Current and Scorchers striker Temwa Chawinga finished 17th at the 2025 Ballon d’Or Féminin ceremony held in France on Monday evening.
Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati made history by becoming the first player to win the women’s Ballon d’Or three times. The 27-year-old claimed the award, with her international teammate and Arsenal winger Mariona Caldentey finishing second.

England had a strong showing with five players in the top 10. Arsenal trio Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly, and Leah Williamson placed third, fifth, and seventh respectively, while Chelsea duo Lucy Bronze and Hannah Hampton rounded out the top 10 in ninth and tenth place.
Bonmati previously won the award in 2023 and 2024. Her victory means Barcelona players have claimed the honor in each of the past five years, following midfielder Alexia Putellas who won in 2021 and 2022.
Chawinga becomes the second Malawian player nominated for the award, following her sister Tabitha Chawinga, who finished 16th last year. Another African player recognized was Zambian striker Barbra Banda, who placed 14th.
Both Chawinga and Banda play in the NWSL, widely considered the strongest women’s league in the world, and both enjoyed exceptional seasons that earned them recognition among the world’s best players.
