Malawian football sensation Tabitha Chawinga was officially presented with the prestigious Regional Annual Sports Awards (RASA) accolade today at the Bingu National Stadium (BNS). The award was presented by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, during a special ceremony.

Minister Mkandawire hailed the award as a significant recognition for Malawian sports, emphasizing that it signals the country’s progress in the sporting arena. “We have never had a chance of getting awards at the RASA, but this year we managed to get one, and that was because of Tabitha Chawinga,” he stated.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting sports initiatives, highlighting their inclusion in the national budget, particularly for disciplines that have historically faced challenges.

“I am very thankful to the President of Malawi and the Sports Council because of the effort they made to make this come home,” Chawinga remarked. “This award is not just for me; it’s for the whole country of Malawi and to all my fans out there.”

Sunduzwayo Madise, Chairperson of the Malawi National Council of Sports Board, echoed the sentiment, stating that Chawinga’s achievement should serve as a powerful motivation for young athletes nationwide. He specifically mentioned the upcoming 11th African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia.

“This should motivate the youths that will be taking part in this year’s 11th African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games to take place in Windhoek, Namibia,” Madise said. “Tabitha Chawinga’s reputation has greatly influenced many people and has encouraged many young people.”
