The Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) has announced plans to host the first-ever World Sports Journalism Day on July 2 in Malawi’s commercial capital, Blantyre.
Under the theme “Sports Journalism for Integrity, Peace & Inclusivity,” the event will celebrate the vital role sports journalists play in promoting integrity, unity, and excellence through ethical sports reporting.
SWAM General Secretary Wesysylas Chirwa highlighted that World Sports Journalism Day has, for decades, been a global platform for acknowledging the powerful influence of sports reporters—not just in the world of sport, but in driving national development.

“Now we are talking about the Malawi 2063 agenda, in which the sports agenda is part and parcel. We believe this gathering will help contribute to that goal. It will also provide a platform where issues such as press freedom for sports reporters will be extensively discussed—setting the tone for a celebration rich in purpose, community impact, and legacy building,” Chirwa said.
He further noted that the event aims to inspire aspiring sports journalists, while celebrating and recognizing both active and retired professionals whose work has left a lasting mark on the game and on the growth of the profession in Malawi.
Chirwa appealed to media owners, the corporate sector, and various stakeholders for partnerships, stressing that the event will require both financial and material support to be a success.
“SWAM humbly appeals to the corporate world to support us with finances and materials. For materials, we are talking about branding items like T-shirts, caps, and more. We also need jerseys and match balls for football, netball, and volleyball—alongside funding for logistics, food, and other essentials,” he explained, assuring potential partners of media mentions and strong brand visibility in return.
To honour members of Malawi’s sports media fraternity, the event will feature activities such as solidarity walks, media dialogues, friendly matches in netball and football, exhibitions, and mentorship sessions.
