The wait is finally over for Songwe Border United, who secured their maiden TNM Super League victory by defeating Chitipa United 1-0 at the Karonga Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, just days after parting ways with head coach Christopher Nyambose.
The rookies had endured a difficult start to their campaign, going 19 games without a win and managing only two draws while keeping just one clean sheet. However, they broke their jinx in dramatic fashion on home soil.

A goal from Owen Mwangonde in the 8th minute proved to be the difference, giving the team a historic victory that lifted spirits at the club.
Caretaker coach Edwin Kaonga expressed his delight with the result and remains optimistic about the team’s prospects moving forward.
“It’s a sweet victory that came because of the good relationship with the players, and also the team’s board supported us tremendously. I believe we will continue doing better and win more points,” said Kaonga.
On the other side, Chitipa United’s assistant coach Sullivan Kandulu conceded the defeat while reflecting on missed opportunities.
“Our opponents got one chance in the early minutes of the first half, which they converted. We had several chances which we missed. I think we underrated our opponents, and we accept that we have lost this game,” said Kandulu.
Despite the historic win, Songwe Border remain rooted to the bottom of the table with five points from one win, two draws, and 17 losses. Chitipa United sit 10th in the league with 23 points from five wins, eight draws, and seven losses.
The victory comes just days after the club relieved head coach Christopher Nyambose of his duties, having failed to secure a win during his tenure with the team.
