NRFA slaps Embangweni United for abandoning match

The Northern Region Football Association competitions subcommittee has fined Embangweni United K200,000 and ruled that they lost 2-0 after abandoning their match against Ekwendeni United on 29 June 2025.

In a press release by the association on Tuesday, 08 July 2025, the team was found guilty of causing the abandonment of the game, which is contrary to Section 18.3 of the Association’s rules and regulations.

According to the report from the referees and match commissioners, the team abandoned the game in the 80th minute when the referee awarded a penalty to Ekwendeni United as they led 1-2 in the game.

“Therefore, the competition’s subcommittee charges you for causing abandonment of the game as per Section 18.3 of the NRFA Rules and Regulations which states that:
‘In the event that the Match Referee shall be forced to stop the match due to refusal to continue with play, the responsible team shall lose the match by a margin of two goals to zero and shall pay a fine of Mk200,000,’” wrote part of the statement.

The Association has given Embangweni the right to appear within 48 hours by paying K500,000 to the NRFA’s disciplinary committee.
