Mwalilino: I aim to win golden boot at the end of season

Mighty Wanderers FC striker, Blessings Mwalilino, says he targets the TNM Super League Golden Boot at the end of the current campaign. The former Karonga United player has now scored in two back-to-back weeks against Silver Strikers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, taking his tally to two goals this season.

The current leaders on the scoring chart are Babatunde Adepoju of Nyasa Big Bullets, Greyson Msowoya of Mighty Tigers, and Zeliati Nkhoma of Kamuzu Barracks, who have scored five goals each.

Mwalilino has been struggling to earn a place in the starting XI for Bob Mpinganjira, but his recent form saw the coach trusting him. He has so far scored three goals for the team, including the Airtel Top 8 goal against his former team, Karonga United, though Wanderers lost 2-1 on aggregate.

Speaking in an interview with Super League of Malawi after scoring a winner in the Blantyre Derby, Mwalilino sets his eyes on the Golden Boot.

“I aim to earn a Golden Boot at the end of the season. Last season, in my maiden Super League appearance with Karonga United, I had eleven goals. I believe I can build on that and be a top goal scorer. I know we have quality strikers in the league, some are leading currently, but I believe with much effort, I can pull wonders as well,” said Mwalilino.

If Mwalilino finds his target, he will retain the award at Wanderers, as Isaac Kaliati was the winner last season after scoring 17 goals from midfield, becoming the first Wanderers player to win the award since Aggrey Kanyenda, who won it in 2006 after scoring 18 goals.

Mwalilino shared his experience of scoring a winner in the derby in his interview, saying he knew before the game that he would score a goal.

“I was so excited being my maiden derby. Also playing before such a crowd, it’s not easy. Special mention should go to my wife. She called and prayed with me before the derby. She told me you will score during then derby and it turned out that I contributed the lone goal of the match.

“I would also like to thank my coach who believed that I can contribute something if featured in that game. Also, my fellow players whom we encouraged one another that guys we can do it. To the fans also for giving us support so that we do well on the pitch,” Sulom quoted.

Greyson Msowoya Joins Golden Boot Race

Mighty Tigers starlet, Greyson Msowoya, has joined the Golden Boot race following his recent eye for goals.
