Mighty Wanderers are on the verge of signing FCB Nyasa Big Bullets midfielder Ernest Petro on a free transfer, following his mutual departure from the People’s Team.
Petro, who joined Bullets in 2017, has fallen out of favor under new coach Peter Mponda this season, making just two substitute appearances despite the team’s midfield struggles.
The player and his representatives requested contract termination to seek regular playing time elsewhere—a decision Bullets have accepted. While the club is yet to officially announce Petro’s departure, sources confirm the midfielder has already left.

Negotiations between Wanderers and Petro’s representatives are at an advanced stage, with the deal expected to be finalized today. The player has already arrived at the Nomads’ clubhouse on Lali Lubani Road.
The signing would represent another coup for Wanderers as they strengthen their squad ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign. The club has already secured the return of striker Muhammad Sulumba, who is also expected to complete his signing today.
From Regular to Surplus

Petro initially sought a loan move to secure playing time, with Creck Sporting Club his preferred destination. However, Bullets advised him to terminate his contract instead—advice he has now accepted.
The midfielder was a key player under former coach Kalisto Pasuwa, memorably scoring the winning goal in the 2024 Airtel Top 8 final against Silver Strikers. His fortunes changed dramatically under Mponda’s regime, with the new coach clearly not rating the player despite ongoing midfield issues.
The situation reached its nadir during the recent Blantyre Derby against Wanderers, where Petro warmed up four times during the 1-0 defeat but was never introduced.
Known by his nickname “Ngwazi,” Petro’s departure ends a hugely successful eight-year association with Bullets. During his tenure, he helped the club win five league titles and numerous cups, including their historic quadruple-winning campaign in 2023.
His contract was originally set to run until January 2026, following an extension signed in 2023 when he was considered reliable under Pasuwa’s leadership.
The move to Wanderers offers Petro a fresh start and the chance to revive his career while helping the Nomads in their continental ambitions.
