Audrow Makonyola, head coach of Mitundu Baptist, has lauded the NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) as a high-pressure, quality tournament, suggesting some Super League teams might even struggle to compete within it.
Makonyola made these remarks after his team secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over rivals Namitete Zitha. This win maintained Mitundu Baptist’s perfect start to the season, giving them three wins from three matches and placing them atop the league table.
“It’s a league full of pressure because there are good teams,” Makonyola stated. “Even some teams in the Super League cannot stand in this league. Also, looking at the quality of some players, I think they can shine even at the national team level.”

His assessment echoes previous sentiments from other coaches, including Bangwe All Stars head coach Isaac ‘Jomo’ Osman and FOMO FC head coach Jimmy Zakazaka, who have both described the NDL as tough due to teams’ thorough preparations.
Mitundu Baptist’s win against Zitha followed two away victories: a 4-0 triumph over Mchinji Villa at Mchinji Community Ground and a 3-0 win against Jenda United at Kasungu Stadium. Makonyola emphasized the significance of the derby win.
“It is a derby, and I can say this game has clearly shown us that we are on a mission to do well in the League,” he explained. “I would say this game was very tough for me since the league started, but a win is a win.”
Mitundu Baptist currently leads the NDL standings after week three with nine points. They sit two points clear of second-placed Ntaja United. The team boasts the league’s best offensive record with nine goals scored and has conceded only one. Their forward, Raheem Mtondera, is the leading scorer with six goals in two matches.
This impressive run comes just one season after Mitundu Baptist was promoted to the Chipiku Stores Central Region Premier League. They secured their spot in the National Division League by finishing third in the Central Region League.
