Madinga’s move to Zambia backed as career stepping stone

Francisco Madinga’s agent, Haroon Cassim, has described his client’s move to Zambia as a crucial stepping stone in the midfielder’s career development.

The former Mighty Wanderers player has signed a two-year contract with Kansanshi Dynamos on a free transfer after choosing not to extend his stay with the Nomads. Madinga informed Wanderers on the 6th of this month that he would not be renewing his deal following its expiration.

While Wanderers initially reported that the player had indicated he was returning to Georgia, where he previously played for Dilla Gori FC, Madinga will instead spend the next two years competing in the Zambian Super League.

Cassim believes the move will help his client elevate his game and potentially secure transfers to bigger clubs in Africa or Europe.

“It is good for him considering that he had played in Europe. It’s a stepping stone for him because the Zambian league is a competitive one, with teams that play in CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup,” Cassim tells MBC2 Sports.

“It is a league which is on TV and hopefully, he will be exposed to some teams. He is 26 years old, now in his prime and he needs to play football.”

Madinga’s career has taken him across multiple continents. He initially joined Wanderers on loan from Namiwawa Rangers before making the move permanent, where he became a crucial player and attracted interest from top African clubs including Orlando Pirates.

In 2020, he secured a three-year deal with Georgian side Dila Gori FC. Following his European stint, he returned to Africa to play for Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy before rejoining Wanderers during the mid-season transfer window of 2023.

The midfielder has been a notable asset for the Malawi National Team, playing a significant role in the Flames’ qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. He also starred in the tournament in Cameroon, memorably providing an assist for Gabadinho Mhango’s goal against Zimbabwe.

Kansanshi Dynamos Football Club, originally founded as Solwezi Dynamos FC in 2009, has become an integral part of both the Solwezi community and Zambian football. The club rebranded to Kansanshi Dynamos FC later that year, aligning with sponsor Kansanshi Mining PLC under their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The club’s journey to the top flight began in the provincial league before securing promotion to the prestigious Zambia Super League after the 2019 season. Their promotion was secured through a dramatic two-legged playoff against Young Green Eagles. After losing the first leg 1-0, Kansanshi staged a remarkable comeback in the second leg, with Ryod Alufonso scoring a last-minute equalizer from a Nasha Kaya assist to force penalties. The team won the shootout 5-4, securing their historic first promotion to the Super League and bringing immense pride to the Solwezi region.

However, the club’s Super League journey has been challenging. The 2019/2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic with Kansanshi in the relegation zone. While they quickly regained promotion after one season, the club unfortunately faced relegation again in the 2023/24 season.
