FOMO FC suffered three defeats in their previous four games before today’s game, losing to Civil Service United, CRECK Sporting, and Mafco FC while the Hammers had lost just one game in their previous four games.
Soaring under the mentorship of the former Hammers’ coaches, Gilbert Chirwa and his Assistant Coach, Luckson Nyoni, FOMO FC started the game better than their visitors as they were being driven by the home fans.
Their dominance in the game paid off just nine minutes into the game when Hassan Liwemba beat the keeper with a sublime finish sending the fans into awil.
The hosts were too hot for the visitors and their striker, Luwemba completed his brace in the 21st minute to give FOMO FC a two-goal advantage.
Mzuzu City Hammers fought back and they pulled one back from the penalty spot through Isaac Msiska just before the break.
Carrying a slender lead in the second half, FOMO FC were cautious as Hammers were battling back in the game. Isaac Msiska nearly levelled the matter in the second half but he was unfortunate to the target after pouncing on Wongan Lungu’s corner-kick.
FOMO FC head coach Gilbert Chirwa was thrilled with the result, praising his team’s performance.
“I am very grateful for the win today,” Coach Chirwa said in a post-match interview. “The boys played hard and deserved the three points.”
Despite the loss, Mzuzu City Hammers coach Elias Chirambo congratulated FOMO FC on their win. However, he expressed frustration with the officiation, claiming that his team was forced to protect themselves from angry FOMO supporters.
“We didn’t get the result we wanted, but I’m proud of my players for their effort,” Coach Chirambo said.
“Unfortunately, the officiation was not up to par, and we had to prioritize our safety in the face of hostile fans.”
The win is a significant boost for FOMO FC, who have been struggling in recent weeks. The team’s fans were overjoyed by the result, celebrating wildly at the final whistle.
With this win, FOMO FC moved up two spots in the TNM Super League table, as they sit 11th with 10 points after playing nine games while Mzuzu City Hammers will look to regroup and bounce back in their next match. They are third with 16 points but they missed the chance to pip Kamuzu Barracks to the second position.
