Karonga United failed to fully capitalize on their numerical and home advantage, settling for a 1-1 draw against Mighty Wanderers in a TNM Super League match on Sunday, June 29. The result was a mixed bag for Karonga United, coming after consecutive defeats in the Airtel Top 8 and TNM Super League.
Both teams fielded strong starting lineups, each aiming for maximum points in a tightly contested match that remained difficult for both sides until the final whistle.

Mighty Wanderers broke the deadlock in the 28th minute with a goal from Gaddie Chirwa. However, their lead was short-lived. Just moments later, Peter Cholopi was sent off with a straight red card for a bad tackle on Zikani Mponda, reducing Wanderers to ten men.
Karonga United quickly seized the opportunity, equalizing in the 40th minute through a penalty expertly converted by Alfred Chizinga.
Despite being a man down for the majority of the match, Wanderers displayed strong defensive resolve in the second half, holding on for the draw. Neither team managed to create significant clear-cut chances after the break.
Karonga United coach, Osca Kaunda, expressed satisfaction with the draw, attributing his team’s challenges to fatigue from extensive travel and a congested fixture schedule.
“We played against Mighty Wanderers, not 10 players. This draw is very useful to us. Sometimes in football, the team with fewer players wins, but our opponent failed,” Kaunda remarked.
Mighty Wanderers coach, Bob Mpinganjira, praised his team’s resilience, stating, “My boys did a wonderful job defending up to the last whistle.”
In another TNM Super League match, Mzuzu City Hammers and Chitipa United played to a goalless draw.
The current TNM Super League standings see Mighty Wanderers in second place with 23 points, trailing FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who lead the table with 24 points. Karonga United currently sits in fifth position with 16 points.
Mighty Wanderers’ next fixture is against Songwe Border United before they return to Blantyre.
