Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya believes that having part-time coaches on the national team does not negatively impact performance, provided the team has the required talent.
He made these remarks on Thursday during a press briefing where the Association unveiled new Technical Director Yvon Avry, a Frenchman who will provide his expertise over the next two years.

When asked about employing head coach Kalisto Pasuwa’s assistant coaches as full-timers as part of technical advancement, Haiya said these coaches add significant value to Pasuwa’s tactical approaches.
“The national team requires us to prepare players from the grassroots. We give everything to the talent, nurture it and develop it for elite football. If you have the right players and right coaches—because I repeatedly say you cannot have right players when you don’t have right coaches—then the team will do well,” said Haiya.
He added that the assistant coaches come from the Super League, which feeds the national team, and their knowledge of most players will be an advantage to Pasuwa in understanding how to use them effectively.
However, Haiya said FAM would welcome government plans to hire the assistant coaches and physical trainer as full-timers, as this would give them ample time to focus on other aspects that could help the national team, particularly identifying talented players from remote areas alongside the technical director.
Haiya also revealed that significant progress is being made on implementing Malawi’s football philosophy and developing a CAF A coaching syllabus, which will be completed soon as part of technical development in the country.
Currently, only Kalisto Pasuwa and Micheal Ngore in the Flames technical panel are fully employed by FAM. Peter Mponda is affiliated with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Prichard Mwansa with Moyale Barracks, Simplex Nthala with Mighty Wanderers, while Taonga Chimodzi and Peter Mgangira are both from Silver Strikers.
