Gaddie Chirwa ruled out as Clement Nyondo returns for game against Hammers in FDH Bank

Mighty Wanderers will be without five key players when they face Mzuzu City Hammers in the FDH Bank Cup round of 16, with Head Coach Bob Mpinganjira confirming significant squad changes ahead of the crucial tie.

The Nomads have been dealt a major blow with midfielder Gaddie Chirwa ruled out after picking up an injury during last Sunday’s match against Civil Service United. The injury has forced Mpinganjira to leave the influential player behind as the team travels for the cup encounter.

Joining Chirwa on the sidelines are four other squad members: Sama Tanjong, Mphatso Kamanga, Richard Chipuwa, and Chimwemwe Nkhoma, all unavailable for selection due to various fitness concerns.

“We didn’t travel with Gaddie Chirwa because he picked up an injury against Civil Service United last Sunday,” Mpinganjira explained to Club Media. “We have also left behind Sama Tanjong, Mphatso Kamanga, Richard Chipuwa, and Chimwemwe Nkhoma.”

However, there is encouraging news for Wanderers supporters as striker Clement Nyondo has recovered from his injury layoff and rejoins the traveling squad.

“Clement Nyondo is back and will be available for selection,” confirmed the coach, providing a much-needed boost to the defensive options.

The squad also includes recent signings Rajab Nyirenda and Muhammad Sulumba, though their availability varies. While Sulumba has been cleared for selection and could make his competitive debut, Nyirenda’s participation remains uncertain.

“We also have Rajab Nyirenda and Muhammad Sulumba in the travelling squad,” Mpinganjira said. “Sulumba will be available for selection, but Nyirenda needs further assessment on his fitness levels before he can feature in any competitive match.”

Despite the injury challenges, Mpinganjira remains focused on the bigger picture – delivering Wanderers’ first FDH Bank Cup triumph. The prestigious tournament, now in its fifth edition, represents unfinished business for the Lali Lubani Road-based club.

“Wanderers has never won this cup. We are determined to win it this year,” Mpinganjira stated. “It’s an issue we have been discussing with the players, and everyone knows how important it is to bring this cup home.”

The coach acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents but emphasized the team’s determination: “I know it will be a difficult game because Mzuzu City Hammers are also looking forward to progress, but we must win it for our fans.”

Wanderers earned their place in the round of 16 after defeating Mafco FC in the previous round at Kamuzu Stadium last month. Now, with a depleted but determined squad, they face another stern test in their quest to finally claim the FDH Bank Cup glory that has long eluded the club’s trophy cabinet.
