Malawi National Football Teams’ patron Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has conceded defeat to former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in the country’s presidential elections.
The outgoing president made the announcement during a national address on Wednesday afternoon, emphasizing his respect for democratic principles and the will of the Malawian people.
“From the official results from the 24 councils, it clearly shows that my main rival, Professor Peter Mutharika has collected insurmountable votes,” Dr. Chakwera stated during his address to the nation.

The president underscored his commitment to democratic governance in accepting the electoral outcome. “I have to accept the results to respect the will of the people, for democracy to prevail. The results show that people want change, and I have to accept them to also respect the constitution of Malawi,” he declared.
Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja is expected to announce the final official results this evening at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).
Dr. Chakwera’s role as patron of the national football teams began on June 5, when he was invited by Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya ahead of the team’s departure for the COSAFA Cup tournament in South Africa.
During his tenure as patron, Dr. Chakwera provided substantial support to the Flames and Scorchers, contributing MK50 million to the teams. He actively led efforts to mobilize both moral and financial support for Malawi’s national football squads, helping to rally public backing for the teams’ campaigns.
The outgoing president’s support extended beyond financial contributions, as he worked to build momentum and enthusiasm among Malawians for their national teams’ international competitions.
Will he remain the patron of the two teams?
This story will be updated following the official announcement of final results by the Malawi Electoral Commission.
