FAM suspends football competitions for 2025 General Elections

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the postponement of all national football competitions from September 12-18, 2025, to allow for smooth preparations and conduct of the country’s Tripartite General Elections scheduled for September 16, 2025.

The suspension will impact two major national competitions: the National Bank Women’s Premiership and the NBS Bank National Division. All matches and activities related to these competitions will be put on hold during the one-week period as the country prepares for and conducts the crucial elections.

FAM explained that the decision was driven by practical considerations surrounding the electoral process. The preparations for the 2025 Tripartite General Elections will significantly affect key stakeholders essential to football operations, including players who may be involved in election duties or affected by movement restrictions, match officials who could be deployed for election responsibilities, and security personnel who will be prioritized for election security duties.

Member associations urged to follow suit

In its official communication released on September 11, 2025, FAM has encouraged all Member Associations across the country to consider implementing similar suspensions for their local competitions during the same period. This recommendation aims to ensure uniformity in the football calendar and acknowledges that the same logistical challenges affecting national competitions will likely impact regional and local football activities.

FAM has assured stakeholders that normal football activities will resume immediately after the election period. All postponed competitions will restart on Thursday, September 19, 2025, allowing sufficient time for post-election normalization.

The postponement demonstrates FAM’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s democratic processes while ensuring that football activities do not interfere with the smooth conduct of elections. “FAM regrets any inconvenience this may cause,” the association stated in its media release, acknowledging the disruption to players, fans, and other stakeholders who had been anticipating the scheduled matches.
