As part of their meticulous preparations for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, have secured a high-profile international friendly against Morocco, courtesy of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

The warm-up match is scheduled to take place on June 19 in Casablanca, and it promises to provide the Scorchers with a stern test as they ready themselves for their crucial two-legged showdown against Angola in the second round of the Qualifiers. FAM has confirmed that the team will depart for Morocco on June 15 and return immediately after the match, on June 20.

The friendly, which has been arranged in collaboration with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, comes at a vital time for both nations. While Malawi looks to fine-tune tactics and build match fitness ahead of their tie against Angola, the Atlas Lionesses are preparing for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which Morocco will host later this year.

Malawi progressed to the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers without kicking a ball after Congo Brazzaville unexpectedly withdrew from the competition. Since then, FAM has made efforts to keep the Scorchers active, arranging back-to-back friendly matches — two against regional rivals Zambia, and another two against powerhouse South Africa.

The clash against Morocco represents another step forward in FAM’s strategy to provide international exposure and competitive minutes for the Scorchers. With the Angola fixture looming — an away match set for October 20, followed by the return leg in Malawi on October 28 — the team is under no illusions about the task ahead.
