Ekhaya targets “mayoh” to build fanbse

Ekhaya United Football Club Chief Executive Officer, Williams Mpinganjira, is optimistic about the team’s future following their promotion to Malawi’s TNM Super League. The Cowboys earned their spot in the elite league on Thursday with a 2-0 win over Nyambadwe United FC at Kamuzu Stadium. Goals from Godnews Mphande and Mwai Bande sealed the victory, bringing their tally to 31 points from 13 games.

Mpinganjira expressed confidence that Ekhaya United can create its own fanbase rather than drawing supporters from existing clubs such as Mighty Mukuru Wanderers or Nyasa Big Bullets, despite the connection to Ekhaya Foods.

“The ones that are Wanderers and Bullets supporters, those will remain their supporters,” Mpinganjira stated. “We are organized enough as an administration to establish a unique identity for Ekhaya United.

“There are many people in the Southern Region who do not support either Wanderers or Bullets. Some have called us ‘mayoh,’ implying that we can’t succeed. Now, we are going to turn those ‘mayoh’ into our fans. We aim to attract youngsters and build a loyal fanbase from the ground up.”

Teams promoted from the Southern Region Football League have historically struggled to survive in the TNM Super League. Many, including Sable Farming, Ntopwa United, and Bangwe All Stars, have been relegated after one or two seasons.

Mpinganjira, however, is determined to defy this trend. He revealed that Ekhaya United’s preparations are focused on long-term stability rather than short-term success.

“We don’t have any temporary measures,” Mpinganjira said. “Teams that have been relegated often relied on short-term plans. We’ve consistently maintained a core team since our days in Division One and through the Premier Division, and we’ll take the same approach into the elite league to ensure we remain there.”

While many clubs aim for trophies after promotion, Mpinganjira emphasized that Ekhaya United’s immediate focus will be survival in the league.

“We’re not putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves or our players,” he explained. “These are young players, and we want them to enjoy the game. Surviving in the elite league is a significant challenge, as we’ve seen with other teams.

“Our main objective is to avoid relegation. Once we’ve secured our place in the league, we can start targeting trophies in the future. For now, I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about what lies ahead.”
