The first semifinal of the Airtel Top 8 Season 8 delivered a golden opportunity for young Edward Thengo to make his senior team debut with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. In a high-stakes clash against Karonga United on Saturday, June 21, at Bingu National Stadium, Thengo’s introduction proved to be a masterstroke, surprising many but quickly justifying the technical panel’s decision.
Wearing jersey number 25, Thengo entered the fray in the 73rd minute, replacing the impressive Henry Chiwaya. His arrival reshaped the Bullets’ defense, shifting them into a three-man backline. Man-of-the-match Blessings Mpokera dropped into central defense, while Andrew Jovinala moved from right-back to cover Chiwaya’s left-back position, allowing Thengo to slot in seamlessly at right-back.

Despite the immense pressure of a semifinal debut, Thengo’s initial touches were nothing short of impressive. He displayed the poise and awareness of a seasoned professional, effortlessly linking up with his defensive partners and confidently overlapping down the right flank. His ventures into the final third created genuine danger, including a brilliant cross that found Babatunde Adepoju, though the opportunity wasn’t converted.
Thengo, who also captains the Malawi U-20 team, was promoted to the senior squad alongside Austin Chirambo earlier this year. Peter Mponda, a respected figure, had previously lauded the youngster’s talent during Bullets’ preparations for a friendly match against Kamuzu Barracks.
“When I saw him, I was surprised by the way he was playing,” Mponda commented. “He was very composed on the ball, and his aerial presence and physical side of the game were very top-notch.” He added, “Of course, he has some area to improve, but he is a very good player.”

Even playing under the lights for the first time, Thengo concluded the match with a remarkable 100% pass completion rate. His only minor misstep came in the 89th minute when he slightly mishandled a ball down the flank.
Thengo’s versatility is a key asset; he can play as a defending midfielder, right-back, and center-back. He was also a vital part of the Malawi U-20 squad that won the Four-Nation tournament.
