The Malawi National Team has dropped two places on the FIFA World Rankings following their shocking 1-0 defeat to São Tomé and Principe, falling from 126th to 128th position.
The Flames concluded their World Cup Qualification campaign with the disappointing loss in Tunisia against a side that had failed to win in 18 consecutive matches prior to the encounter.

The setback undid the progress Malawi made in September, when they climbed from 129th to 126th after defeating Namibia 2-1 and drawing 2-2 with Liberia at home.
Malawi were also scheduled to face Equatorial Guinea, but the match was cancelled after the visitors failed to arrive. The Flames were awarded three points and a 3-0 victory by default.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is planning to arrange friendly matches for the national team in November, with victories potentially helping the Flames recover lost ground on the rankings.
FAM Appoints French Technical Director

In a bid to improve the team’s performance, FAM has appointed French national Yvon Avry as its new Technical Director.
Avry fills the vacancy left by Benjamin Kumwenda’s departure earlier this year. His appointment followed a competitive recruitment process that attracted 17 applicants from around the world.
Three candidates were shortlisted and interviewed on September 23, 2025, by a panel comprising representatives from FAM’s Technical, Administrative, and Human Resources departments. Avry emerged as the top candidate based on his qualifications, international experience, and technical vision aligned with FAM’s developmental objectives.
The highly qualified football technician holds a UEFA A Diploma (FFF, France) and brings extensive international expertise to Malawian football. He previously served as Technical Advisor for the Fédération Malagasy de Football (FMF) and most recently worked as Technical Director for Fosa Juniors FC in Majunga, Madagascar.
