The Council for Southern Africa Football Association, Cosafa will embark on the use of Video Assistant Referees during its 2024 competitions.

The Council announced on Monday through a statement on its website stating that “COSAFA is about to embark on an exciting new era with the acquisition of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment to both roll out at its tournaments and use as a teaching tool for training purposes for match officials on the continent.”

COSAFA Executive Director Sue Destombes and COSAFA Referees Manager Felix Tangawarima have meanwhile appealed to the Member Associations to help their referees adopt the new technology.

“We are saying, together with the member associations, they must show the willingness to develop their referees and make sure that they are appointed for the big tournaments.

“What we have done is that we are putting plans in place for our tournaments there should be VAR, and we have already selected the referees for the tournaments, without excluding female referees,” he said.

COSAFA said it is now in possession of the equipment and will have it in play in the later stages of the men’s senior COSAFA Cup that is set for June.

After a successful pilot project last year at the COSAFA Women’s Championship, the aim is now to have VAR at all COSAFA events in the future.

“But the system will also be used to train referees, which is becoming vital with CAF and FIFA requiring licensed VAR operators at their events,” adds the announcement.
