Chakwera donates MK50 Million to Flames ahead of COSAFA Cup

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has extended a significant boost to the Malawi National Football Team by donating MK50 million ahead of their 2025 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup campaign.


The Flames begin their quest for regional glory today with a clash against Lesotho at the Toyota Stadium, before facing Angola and Namibia in their remaining group stage fixtures.

The donation follows a high-level meeting between President Chakwera and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President, Fleetwood Haiya, during which the Head of State reaffirmed his unwavering support for the team.

“His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, has donated 50 million Kwacha to support the Flames in their quest for the COSAFA Cup,” reads a statement from State House.

The statement further highlights that the President extended his best wishes to the Flames ahead of their opening fixture, while also accepting Mr. Haiya’s invitation to become Patron of both the Malawi Flames and the Scorchers, the women’s national team.


As Patron, President Chakwera is expected to play a leading role in rallying national support—morally, financially, and materially—for both teams as they represent Malawi on the international stage.
