Blue Eagles Netball Team captain Molly Chisambiro has attributed the team’s latest championship victory to unwavering support from Malawi Police Service management, as the dominant side continues to collect silverware.

The team recently added the One Nico Championship to their growing trophy cabinet after defeating fellow heavyweights Kukama Diamonds in the final, further cementing their position as the country’s premier netball force.

During a trophy presentation ceremony at Area 30, Chisambiro expressed gratitude to MPS leadership, noting that the backing they receive keeps the team motivated as they compete in the FDH National Premier League.

“It wasn’t easy to win the Nico Top 12 tournament as it drew big teams from across the country. For us to reach the final by defeating our fellow heavyweight, Kukama Diamonds, was a great achievement. We are motivated by whatever our top management is doing, and this will really drive us to continue working hard to bring more trophies,” the captain said.

The victory came with substantial rewards. Beyond the MK5 million prize money, the team received an additional MK1 million from newly appointed Inspector General Richard Chikoko Luhanga, demonstrating the service’s commitment to its athletes.

Commissioner of Police Dennis Chipao, representing the Inspector General at the ceremony, acknowledged that financial constraints remain a challenge but emphasized management’s dedication to supporting all sporting disciplines within the service.

“As Malawi Police Service, we are very happy and proud of our team for winning the trophy. This is obviously worth celebrating,” Chipao said. “Despite the financial challenges we face, as management there is a lot of commitment to ensure all sports disciplines are fully supported because we understand the importance of sports to our officers, who need to be fit always.”

Chipao outlined the various ways MPS motivates its athletes, including employment opportunities, proper game bonuses and allowances, and promotional prospects within the service. He also noted that the organization remains open to support from external stakeholders and well-wishers.

Individual honors complemented the team’s success, with long-serving player Takondwa Lwazi claiming two accolades—best centre and most valuable player—while Ruth Kaliyenda secured the best defender award.

The Blue Eagles’ dominance in Malawian netball has been remarkable in recent years. Since 2016, the team has won the Mpico Gateway Netball League consecutively through 2024, along with the Salima Sugar and GoTV Trophy titles. Their success has also translated to national team contributions, with several players representing the Malawi Queens.

The latest championship victory underscores the team’s consistency and the effectiveness of MPS’s investment in sports development, creating a winning formula that shows no signs of slowing down.
