National Division League side Bangwe All Stars failed to hold their scheduled training session on Thursday after players boycotted the session in protest over unpaid match bonuses.

Sources close to the matter revealed that the club owes players bonuses for several matches, prompting the collective action. When Wa Mpira visited the club’s training ground on Thursday, no players were present.

“The players contacted the team owners after their 1-0 victory against Ntaja United to demand their wages, but the boss didn’t respond to their calls,” said a source who requested anonymity. “They were promised payment on training day, but the money never came.”

However, Bangwe All Stars Chief Executive Officer Shameem Osman disputed claims that the club owes bonuses for four months, stating the debt covers only three matches.

“It’s not that we don’t want to pay them. My father has just travelled and will be back tomorrow. He has promised to settle the payments upon his return, but the players don’t want to wait,” Osman explained.

She added: “The outstanding amount is only for match bonuses, including the game they played against Ndirande last Saturday.”

Bangwe All Stars currently sit 7th in the 12-team NBS National Division League with 28 points from 22 matches. Having secured survival from relegation, the club will aim to mount a promotion challenge next season.

The team was relegated from the Super League in 2024 after a two-year stint in the top flight. They finished 6th in their debut season under the financial backing of Mphatso Jika.
