At just 25 years of age, Allen Chihana is already making a name for himself in Malawian football circles. The talented striker, who plays for Karonga United, has been handed the coveted jersey number 10 at his club—a number traditionally reserved for players of exceptional talent and leadership on the field.
However, despite donning the number 10 jersey at Karonga United, Chihana has revealed that his heart belongs to jersey 7.
Speaking to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) media at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre during preparations for this year’s COSAFA tournament, Chihana explained why he prefers the number 7 jersey.

“My jersey number is 10 at Karonga United, but I like jersey 7 because of Cristiano Ronaldo,” he said. “He wears the same number, and his style of play amazes me the most.”
Chihana’s admiration for Ronaldo is evident in his playing style, which showcases his speed, agility, and goal-scoring prowess.
The pint-sized striker has been in excellent form, scoring 3 goals in 6 games in the current TNM Super League season. His impressive performance earned him a spot in the Malawi final squad that will represent the nation at the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup in South Africa from June 4 to June 15.
Chihana expressed excitement about finally making the final squad, having previously been called up but failing to feature in any games.
“I am very happy for the second national team call-up,” he said. “In the first call-up, I did not get into the final squad or play because of issues with my passport—but everything is sorted now.”
With his inclusion in the final squad, Chihana is determined to secure a spot in the starting eleven at COSAFA, despite the fierce competition in his position. He knows that the tournament will be a challenging one, but he’s confident in his abilities and is eager to make an impact on the bigger stage.
The Malawi national football team, the Flames, are set to leave for Mangaung | Bloemfontein, South Africa, on Wednesday, June 4, via Chileka Airport in Blantyre.
