The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the departure of its longtime General Secretary (GS), Alfred Gunda, whose contract expires this month. After serving the organization for nine years, Gunda will be replaced by Abdul Chiwalo, an ACCA Chartered Accountant with extensive experience in financial management.
Gunda, who was appointed GS in 2016 under former FAM president Walter Nyamilandu, has been a key figure in Malawian football. Before his appointment, he served as the General Secretary of the Northern Region Fooall Association and was briefly a member of the FAM executive committee.

The decision not to renew Gunda’s contract was made earlier this year. According to FAM President Fleetwood Haiya, the executive committee unanimously approved his proposition to appoint Chiwalo as the new GS, effective August 18, 2025.
In a press release, Haiya expressed gratitude for Gunda’s contributions. “On behalf of the Executive Committee and the entire football fraternity, I wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Alfred Gunda for his unwavering dedication and invaluable contribution to the transformation of football in Malawi,” Haiya stated. “We shall continue to draw from his wealth of experience and knowledge, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”
Chiwalo brings a wealth of expertise to the role. He holds a Master’s in Financial Management, a Master’s in Economic Policy, and a Bachelor’s in Accounting. With over 15 years of experience in management and decision-making roles, he previously served as a Management Accountant at MERA and was the Former Chairperson of the Eastern Region Football Association.
Gunda’s departure is the latest in a series of leadership changes at FAM. Several other officials who joined during the Nyamilandu era have also left recently. They include former commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola, technical director Benjamin Kumwenda, marketing and broadcasting manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe, and club licensing and compliance manager Casper Jangale. Former finance and administration director Christopher Mdolo retired last year.
