Songwe Border United earned their second point of the TNM Super League season after a goalless draw against a 10-man Mighty Tigers at Karonga Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The draw extends the rookies’ winless streak as they failed to capitalize on a numerical advantage for the final 22 minutes of the match.
The hosts, still searching for their inaugural league victory after 13 previous defeats and one draw, started the game with intent. Mussa Mwampope and Pamene Mwakikunga both had early shots that went wide of the target. Mighty Tigers’ first real chance came from Joseph Balakasi just before the half-hour mark, but his effort also missed the mark.
The second half saw a more open game with both teams creating opportunities. Mighty Tigers’ Masambelo Kalua and Songwe’s Joseph Chija each had chances but were unable to find the back of the net. The match took a turn in the 78th minute when Tigers’ Alex Kambirinya received his second yellow card and was sent off.

Despite the man advantage, Songwe could not break the deadlock. Tigers nearly stole a late victory when substitute John Kamwendo’s shot narrowly missed the target in the 85th minute.
Following the match, Songwe’s head coach, Christopher Nyambose, expressed frustration with his team’s lack of clinical finishing. “The chances of surviving are between 50 and 70 percent,” Nyambose said. “There are 15 games left in the second round, so I think we can pull a surprise. The problem is that I was building the team and trying to earn points at the same time. I’m happy because we’ve improved our defense, but we need to find sharp strikers to solve the problem of not scoring goals.”
Mighty Tigers’ coach, Leo Mpulula, was visibly disappointed with his team’s performance. “This was not an expected performance today,” he said. “We didn’t come to play and we displayed bad football. Even our tactical changes didn’t bring what we wanted, so I’m very disappointed.”
With the draw, Songwe Border United remains in 16th place with two points from two draws and 13 losses. Mighty Tigers hold on to 13th place with 16 points from four wins, four draws, and seven losses.
