Mighty Wanderers Queens are planning well for the future after introducing 14-year-old Maureen Mataya, who scored on her debut to brighten her prospects in the National Bank of Malawi National Women’s Premiership.

Mataya made her first appearance in the league in the 60th minute alongside another young talent, Sella Masayi, replacing the team’s trusted forward Tawina Kawaga with the side already leading 3-0.

Her early touches were coupled with brilliance as she looked comfortable on the ball, beat her markers with ease, and played clean passes to her teammates.

“She was already training with the team when we were playing in the lower league, but her registration card was not processed in time. This was her first game in the elite league,” said assistant coach Sungeni Msiska.

Mataya came close to scoring her first goal when she went one-on-one with goalkeeper Mwai Mhango, who produced a great save to deny the youngster in the 79th minute. However, she would not be denied, finishing brilliantly from a lovely pass by Faluna Umali to open her scoring account.

In a post-match interview with Wa Mpira, Mataya expressed her happiness about the debut and goal.

“It shows that age doesn’t matter when it comes to performing well in the league. I was not afraid when I was brought on, and I am happy to have scored my first goal,” said Mataya.

Meanwhile, head coach Thom Kazembe said the team is planning for a smooth generational transition.

“We have many youngsters who will grow over time, so we are preparing for the next generation to ensure a clean transition,” explained Kazembe.
