In a night that will echo through Malawi’s boxing history, Wilson “Bronze Boy” Phiri defied all odds on May 25, toppling the towering Simon Tchetha to seize the National Super Middleweight Championship at a raucous Bremat Multipurpose Hall.
Leading into the bout, the narrative favored Tchetha — a feared puncher with an imposing frame and a reputation for knockouts. Pundits and fans alike pegged him as the favorite. But under the bright lights and before a charged Lilongwe crowd, it was Phiri who delivered the performance of a lifetime.
From the first bell, Phiri set the tone with speed, composure, and ring intelligence. Darting around the ring with relentless energy, he closed spaces behind a tight high guard, unleashed razor-sharp combinations, and racked up points with surgical precision. Every successful jab, every slick dodge drew thunderous roars from the home crowd.

“Tchetha is a powerful boxer, but I am more technical and skillful,” said a jubilant Phiri after his win. “I managed to get the victory, and now I am looking for international bouts.”
Tchetha brought the power he’s known for, targeting the body with thunderous shots in hopes of breaking down Phiri’s defenses. But no matter how fierce the blows, Phiri stood firm — his ironclad guard and strategic footwork nullifying much of the threat.
“Phiri is strong, and his guard is even stronger,” Tchetha conceded after the match. “He did not surrender to my punches.”
As the fight wore on and Tchetha’s frustration grew, Phiri’s confidence soared. By the final rounds, the tide had turned undeniably. Fans shook their heads in disbelief — not out of disappointment, but awe. The underdog had rewritten the script.
When the final bell rang, there was little doubt. Wilson Phiri, once doubted and overlooked, was now Malawi’s new National Super Middleweight Champion — a fighter whose fists have rewritten his destiny.
