Mighty Wanderers Queens have picked up their first-ever win on home soil in the National Bank of Malawi National Women’s Premiership after beating Moyale Sisters 4-0 in a match played at the Mpira Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Nomads had claimed just one point from home matches in the first round while securing four wins and a draw away from home, but they were in top form against the soldiers to seal the victory.

Funny Moyo opened the scoring in the 15th minute with her third goal of the season before Tawina Kawaga doubled the lead after being set up by Esmy Chisale seven minutes later. Chisale then got on the end of Faluna Umali’s brilliant move to score her first goal of the season.

Head coach for the Nomads, Thom Kazembe, hailed his players for a brilliant performance in the game.

“It’s good to get our first win at home as it is something that we have been looking for, and I believe that we will continue doing better,” said Kazembe.

On his part, Moyale Sisters head coach John Chimwala conceded the defeat, saying his players failed to adapt to the artificial turf at the Mpira Stadium.

“We did not play well because my girls struggled to play on the artificial turf. That’s why we struggled in the first half, but at least we improved in the second half. We will continue fighting and we will not be relegated this season,” said Chimwala.

The win took the Nomads up to third in the league with 17 points from five wins, two draws, and three losses, while Moyale Sisters remain eighth with five points from one win, two draws, and seven defeats.

Leticia Chinyamula scored twice to take her tally to eight goals as the second-top scorer in the league, while Talandira Chinyamvula added a third to seal the win and take the team closer to leaders Silver Ladies.

Assistant coach for Ascent Academy, Brian Kamenya, said his team had a slow start in the first half but managed to perform well after making changes.

“We are coming off a draw, so the win will help the players to continue doing better and also move closer to Silver Ladies at the top,” said Kamenya.

On his side, assistant coach for Topik Academy Kelvin Bwayala sees improvements in the team despite remaining winless.

“We gifted them the goals, but we played well throughout the match. We are seeing good improvements in the team, and I am happy about that despite struggling with results,” said Bwayala.

The win took Ascent up to 23 points, four behind Silver Ladies, from seven wins, two draws, and one loss, while Topik Academy remain bottom with three points from three draws and seven defeats.

Civil Women Start Second Round with Victory

Civil down MK Academy

In Lilongwe, Vitumbiko Mkandawire was on target again as Civil Women started the second round with a win after beating MK Academy 2-0 at the Civo Stadium.

Mkandawire scored her fifth goal of the season in the first half before Jesse Yosefe added the second in the second half to seal the win for the civil servants.

Head coach for the team, Collins Pofera, was happy with the win, saying his players followed instructions well.

“We agreed to get an early goal, which really happened, and we could have scored almost five goals in the first half, but we missed the chances. But a win means we played very well in the game,” said Pofera.

On his side, head coach for MK Academy Khumbo Sibale hailed his players for their performance, saying they are improving day by day.

“We are coming from a 7-0 loss against Silver Ladies, and today it is just 2-0, which means we are improving. We also had four players who have just been promoted into the team, so we are happy with the progress,” said Sibale.

The win was Civil’s third of the season. They remain seventh on the log table with 13 points from three wins, four draws, and three defeats, while MK Academy remain ninth with four points from four draws and six defeats.

Ntopwa, Bullets Play Out Goalless Draw

Long time foes share spoils

Finally, in a late kick-off match in Blantyre, Kukoma Ntopwa Queens missed a chance to claim a double over FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women after squandering several opportunities in a goalless draw at the Mpira Stadium.

The Amaghetto kids dominated the game throughout but failed to get past Thoko Mwase’s goal, while Bullets’ best moment came when Alexia Iouria Yiannakis hit the crossbar from a well-taken free kick, giving Ntopwa a scare.

Head coach for Kukoma Ntopwa Queens, Isaac Jomo Osman, said his team played well but missed many chances despite having the majority of his squad injured.

“We wanted a win, but as you know, this is a derby and the players had unnecessary pressure, making them miss the chances we got,” said Osman.

On his side, assistant coach for Bullets Women Charles Lubani said a draw was a good result for his team.

“It was surely a tough match because Ntopwa played well. We struggled, but because we have many injuries and most of the players that played today are from the Reserve side, a draw is a good result for us,” said Lubani.

Meanwhile, Kukoma Ntopwa remain sixth on the table with 14 points from four wins, two draws, and four defeats, while Bullets Women drop a step down to fifth with 15 points from four wins, three draws, and three defeats.

Action continues on Sunday as Silver Strikers Ladies host MDF Lioness at the Silver Stadium as they look to make it 10 wins out of 10 matches in the league.
