Mighty Tigers captain Kelvin Banda has confirmed his departure from the club following the expiration of his contract on December 31, 2025, bringing an end to his tenure with the Kaukau boys after their historic relegation from the TNM Super League.
The defensive stalwart, who has been instrumental at the heart of Tigers’ backline, will not renew his contract with the club as they prepare for life in the lower division for the first time since 1986.

Banda’s decision means he will miss the upcoming Castel Challenge Cup campaign, with the former Malawi Under-20 captain opting instead to take a holiday at his home in Dwangwa as he weighs his next move.
The departure represents a significant blow to Tigers as they attempt to regroup and rebuild following their drop from the top flight—a fall that ended a 39-year stay in Malawian football’s premier division.
Banda’s commitment to Tigers was evident throughout the 2025 season, despite reported interest from several top-flight clubs. Mighty Wanderers, Civil Service United, and Creck Sporting Club all pursued the defender’s signature, but he remained loyal to the Kaukau boys through their ultimately unsuccessful battle against relegation.
However, the club’s demotion appears to have altered the captain’s calculations about his future. At a crucial stage of his career, Banda has chosen to explore opportunities elsewhere rather than lead Tigers’ promotion campaign from the lower division.
Banda now heads home to Dwangwa for a break but his next destination remains uncertain. With three clubs having previously expressed interest, the experienced defender is unlikely to lack suitors when he returns to the market in the new year.
