MDF Lioness returned to winning ways in style on Wednesday afternoon, surging into third place in the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership after a commanding 5-0 victory over Topik Academy at the Champions Stadium.
The win was spearheaded by a sensational hat-trick from Scorchers’ international Asimenye Simwaka.

Simwaka set the tone early by assisting Sabina Thom for the opening goal just five minutes into the game. She then grabbed her first goal in the 8th minute, netted her second in the 32nd minute, and completed her hat-trick five minutes later, effectively ending the contest before halftime.
Catherine Kachala scored the team’s fifth and final goal in the 48th minute, after which the Lioness maintained control to prevent any further damage.
Head coach for the soldiers, Captain John Kaputa, hailed his team for their outstanding performance.
“The League is becoming very competitive now, and teams are desperately seeking three points in their games, so this win is vital because it will take us further up the table. I’m happy that we are improving day by day, and the players are following the coaches’ instructions,” Kaputa said.
On the losing side, Topik Academy assistant head coach Kelvin Bwayala remained defiant, expressing confidence that his team will not be relegated this season despite managing only one point from eight games.
“The girls are still learning, and it is a time to gain experience, which we are slowly getting. The games are still on; I believe we will start doing better very soon,” Bwayala stated.
MDF Lioness now has 14 points from four wins, two draws, and two defeats in the league. Meanwhile, Topik Academy remains rooted at the bottom of the table with just one point from one draw and seven losses.
