Silver’s Title Defence Dreams Dim Up North As They Drop Points Against Karonga

It will now take a miracle for Silver Strikers to defend the TNM Super League crown. Drama must happen, and if it does, with the status quo, it would truly be an element of surprise.

A five-game winning streak has come to an end for the Central Bankers following a painful 1–1 draw against Karonga United at Karonga Stadium in the scorching Sunday afternoon of December 14. Alfred Chizinga opened the scoring in the 71st minute following a relay pass from Anthony Mfune, before Stain Davie, off the bench, headed home a Zebron Kalima delivery from a well-weighted corner to restore parity.

Going into the game, Silver wished for victory in all their remaining fixtures and at least a defeat for Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in one of their games for the Bankers to get their hands on the Super League crown in successive seasons. However, with this result, mathematically, Silver now need to win their remaining three games while hoping Wanderers and Bullets lose both of their remaining two fixtures.

Silver remain in third position with 57 points amassed from 27 games, while Wanderers continue to top the log with 65 points from 28 games. Bullets are second with 62 points, also from 28 games.

Silver’s possible maximum tally stands at 66 points. Wanderers, however, need only a draw from their remaining fixtures to reach that mark, while a win and a draw for Bullets would also see them attain the same total.

This means that if Wanderers lose one game and draw the other, while Bullets win one and draw the other, and Silver win all their games, the title race would then be decided by goal difference.

However, Silver are also third best in goal difference. Bullets have scored 56 and conceded 26, giving them a goal difference of plus 30. Wanderers have scored 43 and conceded 12 for a goal difference of plus 31, while Silver have scored 45 and conceded 17, leaving them with a goal difference of plus 28.

All factors stubbornly point away from the Bankers and, as it stands, the vision is fading and the dreams are dimming for Silver to set their eyes clearly on the silverware.

In Karonga, the opening half was a story of resilience and missed chances. Silver goalkeeper George Chikooka was called into action as early as the 13th minute, standing firm under sustained Karonga pressure. The hosts continued to push, but Silver’s backline, expertly marshalled by Mac Donald Lameck and Innocent Shema, held its shape to keep the contest goalless.

Clear chances were few, with Uchizi Vunga failing to beat Karonga custodian Maclean Mwale, while injury stoppages involving Levison Maganizo and Lovemore Ngolombe disrupted the rhythm before the interval, which ended 0–0.

The tempo lifted after the restart. Karonga came close in the 48th minute when Godfrey Sibale wasted a clear sight of goal from inside the box, though the effort would not stand as Anthony Mfune was flagged offside. Both sides introduced fresh legs past the hour mark in search of a breakthrough, and it was the hosts who struck first.

Silver responded with urgency and eventually found a way back, levelling the scores to restore parity as the match entered its closing stages.

Silver Strikers assistant coach Mapopa Msukwa acknowledged a tough outing in Karonga but praised his team’s fighting spirit.

“We have gotten a point away, which is good for us. The league is still open until the last game. We will come flat out in the next games. I call on our fans to keep cheering us until the final day,” he said.

His counterpart, Oscar Tindic Kaunda, praised his charges for an improved performance.

“It was a tough game, and I thank my boys. They have played really well, unlike in the past games. I just encourage them to play as they have done today. We are still in contention for a top-four finish; we are just three points away,” he said.

All signs may point away from the Bankers, but football has always thrived on defiance. The slimmest of chances still live, and in that narrow space between hope and surrender, Silver Strikers continue to walk.
