Silver Strikers secured their progression to the next round of the CAF Champions League following a tactical goalless draw against Madagascar champions Elgeco Plus FC at Bingu National Stadium. The Bankers advanced courtesy of the away goals rule, having earned a crucial 1-1 draw in the first leg at Cote d’Or National Complex in Mauritius.
Etson-Kadenge Mwafulirwa and his team will now start preparing for the second round game against Tanzania Champions, Yanga SC who hammered Williete FC of Angola 5-0 on aggregate. The games will be played between the weekend of 17 and 19 October.
First Half: cautious opening despite early promise

The encounter commenced with Silver Strikers establishing territorial dominance, controlling possession in the opening exchanges. However, the visitors served an early warning in the 7th minute when they launched two rapid-fire attempts on goal, exploiting a momentary lapse in Silver’s concentration. Goalkeeper George Chikooka demonstrated his class with decisive interventions to preserve his side’s clean sheet.

Elgeco Plus adopted a pragmatic defensive approach, frustrating the hosts’ attacking ambitions from the outset. Stain Davie orchestrated a promising move in the 9th minute, delivering an inviting cross that was efficiently cleared by the resolute visitors’ defense.
Despite monopolizing possession, the Bankers encountered considerable difficulty penetrating Elgeco’s well-organized defensive structure. The Mauritius side made an early tactical adjustment after thirty minutes, introducing Tokyo Rakotondraibe in place of Kelvin Ismail to bolster their midfield presence.
The substitution almost yielded immediate dividends as Elgeco orchestrated a dangerous attack down the left flank four minutes later, whipping in a menacing cross that was expertly dealt with by Maxwell Paipi’s composed defending.
The tempo remained measured as both sides exchanged intricate passing sequences, entertaining the appreciative crowd. Medical attention was required for Levison Maganizo in the 41st minute following a challenge, providing both coaches with an opportunity to issue tactical instructions to their respective squads.
After two additional minutes of stoppage time, the first half concluded with the scoreline unchanged, as neither side could capitalize on the opportunities created.
Second Half: Sustained pressure meets resolute defense

Silver Strikers emerged for the second period with renewed vigor, making a double substitution as Chisisi Maonga and Stain Davie were replaced by Zebron Kalima and Binwell Katinji respectively. The changes immediately injected fresh impetus into the hosts’ attacking play.
Andrew Joseph demonstrated his technical ability early in the half, beating his marker before setting up Maonga, whose lifted ball found Davie in an offside position, nullifying a potentially promising move.
The Bankers intensified their offensive pressure, creating a succession of half-chances. In the 49th minute, Macdonald Lameck delivered an excellent cross to the newly-introduced Katinji, whose attempted connection sent the ball skyward rather than goalward.
Silver’s persistence nearly paid dividends in the 50th minute when they thought they had broken the deadlock, only for the referee to detect an infringement in the penalty area, awarding a free-kick to the visitors instead.
The hosts continued their relentless assault on Elgeco’s goal, mounting wave after wave of attacks. However, the visitors’ defensive resolve remained unshakeable, denying the Bankers any clear-cut opportunities. Chikondi Kamanga received the first booking of the match in the 54th minute for a foul on an Elgeco player, with the visitors’ Solonjato reciprocating three minutes later following a challenge on Kamanga.
Silver’s talisman Binwell Katinji thought he had provided the decisive moment when he headed down for Andrew Joseph, who fired into the net, only for the assistant referee’s flag to rule out the effort for offside.
Elgeco’s goalkeeper produced a spectacular save in the 62nd minute, denying Dan Sandukira’s cross after the defender had received possession from Zebron Kalima. Tokyo received a yellow card for Elgeco in the 64th minute following a foul on Kalima.
The visitors conjured their best opportunity of the encounter in the 79th minute when Randrianjato unleashed a thunderous effort from just outside the penalty area, but his shot whistled narrowly wide of the crossbar.
Silver’s final personnel change came in the 82nd minute as captain Chikondi Kamanga made way for Ernest Petro, followed three minutes later by the introduction of Charles Chipala for the controversial Andrew Joseph.
The closing stages witnessed frantic attacking from the hosts as they desperately sought the goal that would eliminate any anxiety about their progression. Elgeco, however, remained disciplined and organized, repelling everything Silver could muster.
The visitors briefly threatened in the 84th minute with a venomous effort from distance, but Chikooka was equal to the task with another fine save. Macdonald Lameck continued to pose problems with his crossing ability, finding Mwase with a pinpoint delivery that the striker headed over the crossbar.
Despite three additional minutes of stoppage time and continued pressure from the Bankers, the match concluded without further incident, the goalless draw sufficient to secure Silver Strikers’ progression to the next round.
Analysis: Mission accomplished through tactical discipline

While the spectacle may have lacked goals, Silver Strikers executed their game plan to perfection. Aware that a draw would suffice following their away goal in Mauritius, the Bankers demonstrated tactical maturity in managing the encounter.
Elgeco Plus proved formidable opponents, displaying the defensive organization and counter-attacking threat that has served them well in continental competition. Their ability to frustrate Silver’s attacking players while creating occasional opportunities of their own highlighted their tactical sophistication.
The result represents a significant milestone for Silver Strikers, who continue to establish themselves as a force in Malawian football. Their progression to the next round of the CAF Champions League provides valuable experience and exposure that will benefit the club’s long-term development.
