President of the Republic of Malawi, Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of former Flames striker and national football legend, Esau Kanyenda, who died in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, 2 December 2025.
In his message, President Mutharika—speaking alongside the First Lady Dr. Getrude Mutharika—described Kanyenda as “a true son of the soil” whose commitment and talent lifted Malawi’s flag across Africa and Europe.

Kanyenda famously starred for Russian side FC Rostov during a career that earned him admiration both at home and abroad.
The President highlighted Kanyenda’s pivotal role in guiding Malawi to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, calling it one of the proudest milestones in the country’s football history.
Even after hanging up his boots, Kanyenda continued to serve the game as a mentor and strong voice for football development, dedicating himself to nurturing local administrators and young talent.
“As we mourn his passing, the First Lady and I extend our deepest condolences to the Kanyenda family during this difficult moment,” he said.
President Mutharika concluded his message by honouring the fallen star: “Rest in peace, legend Esau.”
Reports indicate that Kanyenda has been battling cancer for some time and it was on Monday, December 1 when he broke the air by posting on his Facebook page about the disease that has claimed his life.
“Hello everyone!!
“Just to let you know that I’m diagnosed with liver cancer here in UK.
“I’m fighting for this.
” Need your prayers,” read the post.
Kanyenda inspired many. For the life he lived, he really should rest well.
