“We are thrilled with how everything has started. What began as a small idea has now become a reality. We are proud to be part of this major development in Malawian football,” Chanza said.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya hailed the new league as a milestone in the country’s football development.
“This is a historic achievement. The NDL will help uncover hidden talent across the nation. With matches being broadcast on television, more players will be exposed, which is crucial for strengthening our national team,” he explained.
The launch match saw visitors Mitundu Baptist thrash hosts Mchinji Villa 4-0. Josophat Kalira opened the scoring before Rahim Mtondera netted a sensational hat-trick to give Mitundu a commanding win.

On Sunday, former Super League side FOMO FC suffered a narrow 0-1 home defeat to Chintheche United. Thom Kamanga’s second-half goal sealed the win for the visitors and broke the hearts of FOMO fans who are hopeful for a quick return to top-flight football following their 2024 relegation.
FOMO head coach Jimmy Zakazaka remained optimistic despite the setback.
“It’s just the first game, and we have time to bounce back. We played well and created chances but couldn’t convert, while our opponents made the most of their single opportunity. We’ll come back stronger,” he said.
Another relegated outfit, Bangwe All Stars, began their campaign on a high with a 2-1 victory over Jenda United. Dayson Moffat and Melvin Mwala were on target for Bangwe, while Ganizani Muwamba scored the consolation for the visitors.
Despite the win, Bangwe coach Isaac Jomo Osman said the performance left room for improvement.
“We’re happy with the result, but we didn’t play convincingly. First matches are always tricky, but we have a lot of work ahead to improve the team,” he commented.
Elsewhere, Baka City edged Red Lions 1-0 in Karonga, thanks to a goal from Geoffrey Mwakyembe.
Ntaja United secured a 2-0 win over Chilumba Barracks with goals from Asante Manda and Frazer Mbewe, while Namitete Zitha edged Ndirande Stars 1-0 through a goal from Lawrence Chilanga.
After week one, Mitundu Baptist top the standings on goal difference, followed by Ntaja United, Bangwe All Stars, Baka City, Chintheche United, and Namitete Zitha—all tied on three points. Jenda United, FOMO FC, Ndirande Stars, Red Lions, Chilumba Barracks, and Mchinji Villa occupy the lower half of the table after opening round losses.
