FCB Nyasa Big Bullets reclaimed the top spot in the TNM Super League on Wednesday, delivering a convincing 3-0 victory over Moyale Barracks at Kamuzu Stadium. This win propelled them above rivals Mighty Wanderers FC, who have played one less game.

The match showcased Bullets’ attacking prowess. Babatunde Adepoju was instrumental in the opener, expertly outwitting his marker to set up Chikumbutso Salima for a tap-in.

The comprehensive victory was sealed in the second half when Chawanangwa Gumbo struck with conviction.
With this resounding triumph, Bullets have now amassed an impressive 24 points from 9 games, leapfrogging Mighty Wanderers FC, who sit on 22 points from 8 outings.

Despite the emphatic win, Head Coach Peter Mponda expressed that his team is still a work in progress. “I’m happy with the win but not the performance; it was a 50-50 affair,” he stated after the game. “Maybe the game was too easy for us, which led to making unnecessary mistakes that should not happen, especially here at home.”

Mponda highlighted inconsistencies in their play. “It was a game of phases. In some moments, we were linking brilliantly, but in some moments we were switching off, and the moment we switched off, we were making unnecessary mistakes. But credit should go to the guys: clean sheet, three points, very happy.”

Defensive concerns despite stellar record

Interestingly, Mponda also pointed to defensive areas needing improvement, despite Bullets boasting the league’s best defensive record.

They have conceded a remarkable only two goals in 10 matches this season, a stark contrast to Mighty Wanderers FC and Ekwendeni Hammers, who have each conceded four. Bullets have also kept an impressive eight clean sheets.

“Defensively, we are not good; we haven’t reached the stage we want to be,” Mponda admitted.

“Credit should go to the attacking players because most of the times when we are on the ball, we are starving the opponents, that’s why we are bagging those clean sheets. But all in all, a very good performance today.”
