Mpinganjira overwhelmed with sponsoring Wanderers on his own, cut costs

Mighty Wanderers Football Club Board Chairperson and President, Thom Mpinganjira, is reportedly struggling with the financial burden of solely sponsoring the club, leading to significant cost-cutting measures.

This development comes after Mpinganjira took a majority stake in the team in 2022 as part of a commercialization drive, injecting millions into the club.

According to reports from Wa Ganyu, Mpinganjira has instructed the board to trim the technical panel for away games in an effort to alleviate the financial strain.

This directive was evident during Sunday’s Super League match against Kamuzu Barracks in Dowa, where several key members of the technical staff were left behind.

Among those reportedly excluded from the trip to Champions Stadium were second assistant coach Sherry Msuku, striker’s trainer Peter Wadabwa, performance/data analyst Anstey Chinombo, physiotherapist Victor Walani, and a security officer. The board cited “financial constraints” as the reason for their absence.

Further reports indicate that the financial crunch is also impacting player and staff remuneration. While Mighty Wanderers technical panel members typically receive MK100,000 each for a winning game, they are now reportedly being forced to share game bonuses and allowances with non-traveling team members in a 2:3 ratio. This suggests a broader effort to distribute the limited funds across a wider group.
