Morocco kicked off their quest for a second Africa Cup of Nations title with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in rainy Rabat, though the hosts were made to work harder than expected against the determined Indian Ocean islanders.
The tournament hosts began brightly and earned an early penalty in the 11th minute when Iyad Mohamed hauled down Brahim Diaz inside the box. However, Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor produced a crucial save, getting his left knee to Soufiane Rahimi’s spot-kick to keep his side level.

The match remained goalless through a frustrating first half as Comoros defended resolutely, sitting deep and denying Morocco space to exploit. The breakthrough finally arrived 10 minutes into the second period when Diaz found himself unmarked near the penalty spot and swept home Noussair Mazraoui’s precise low cross. The Real Madrid midfielder’s strike was met with thunderous approval from the partisan crowd.
The goal opened up the contest considerably. Comoros forward Rafiki Said tested Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who blocked well with his legs, while Mazraoui saw a fine effort pushed away by the impressive Pandor at the other end.
Morocco sealed the three points with a moment of individual brilliance 15 minutes from time. Substitute Ayoub El Kaabi produced a sensational overhead kick that left Pandor with no chance, sending the home supporters into raptures and easing any late nerves.
The victory came despite significant personnel challenges for Walid Regragui’s side. Influential captain Achraf Hakimi was only fit enough for a place on the bench, still recovering from an ankle injury sustained playing for Paris Saint-Germain in a Champions League fixture in early November. The Atlas Lions also lost experienced center-back Romain Saiss to injury early in the match, forcing an unwanted reshuffle.
The win extended Morocco’s remarkable world record run to 19 consecutive victories, underlining their status as one of the tournament favorites. However, Regragui will know sterner examinations lie ahead, with a Group A clash against Mali scheduled for Friday at 20:00 GMT.
Monday’s schedule features three fixtures, including the second Group A encounter between Mali and Zambia. Group B action begins with Egypt and South Africa both launching their campaigns.
